At the German Embassy School, we provide an environment where our children develop into empathetic, self-directed, critical thinkers who don’t give up when faced with challenges.
Our kindergarten has an enrollment of around 110 children between the ages of 1-6 years. The children are organized into groups of 16-20 students led by German-speaking educators and Ethiopian teaching assistants.
DBSAA primary school serves grades 1-4 with around 105 students in small classes of 15. The academic program covers the German curriculum plus English to promote multilingualism.
DBSAA secondary school serves grades 5-10, following the German state of Thuringia’s academic framework. With around 100 students across small classes of 12-15, the curriculum includes core subjects like German, English, Math, Sciences and more.
This programme is an academically challenging two-year pre-university curriculum leading to an internationally recognized diploma. IBDP students undertake college-level course work, in-depth research, and community service modeled on university studies.
Without exaggeration, I strongly believe that DBSAA is currently the best school in Ethiopia; if not one of the best by any international standard. The school is a well kept secret of a few for many reasons. I am proudly testifying this because my son, thanks to his teachers and the dedicated school system, is now performing very well in one of the best preparatory schools in the U.S...I can say that I saw my son grow at DBSAA with personality, athleticism, acquiring skills in performing arts, acting at an early age in plays and theaters, music, IT, languages, and developing acute intellectual skills... Overall, I would like to say thank you and Kudos to the DBSAA teacher’s and administration for achieving such standard while facing several challenges.
Yonathan Eskinder Joseph Former ParentThe German school holds many wonderful memories for me. My first class teacher was Mr. Riedel. I also remember Mrs. Schenk, who was later replaced by Mr. Kolbe. Ms. Däumlich❤️ The school was located on the grounds of the German embassy, where giant tortoises and some locals lived. The school always seemed like a fairytale to me as it was in such a magical setting. We were always taken by bus to the music and art lessons, which took place in old rooms. These old buildings served as the perfect adventure playground for us as they exuded an eerie atmosphere. It was an exciting adventure for us every time. Mrs. Wollenberg and her delicious food during the breaks!

The school library is open Monday to Friday mornings. It offers a generous range of German and English literature for young and old as well as radio plays, DVDs and games.
The cafeteria is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We have introduced a cashless system at DBSAA, which is based on “Amole”, the electronic payment platform of Dashen Bank. Three menus are offered daily (Ethiopian, international and vegetarian). Primary school children have the opportunity to pre-order meals for 2 weeks.
The first day of school at the start of the school year starts with an assembly in the gym. You will receive more information about this in a parent letter in good time. Children who come to DBSAA during the school year go to the office with their parents at 7:30 a.m. on the first day of school and are then accompanied to class.
You can find abandoned sports bags, school pencil cases or similar items in our “Lost and Found” cupboard next to the cafeteria. Please contact the secretary’s office. Valuables such as jewelry, wallets, etc. are kept in the secretary’s office.
A nurse is available on campus every weekday from 7:30AM to 5PM to attend to student medical needs. Parents will be contacted to pick up children who are unwell. Please provide emergency contact details in your child’s file and update the school if there are any changes. The school has always felt like my second home. Everyone is very welcoming and caring, the school community is like family and makes up a large portion of my fondest memories. I've attended the DBSAA since kindergarten all the way up to 12th grade along with most of my peers and never once doubted that I belong. The parties and assemblies were always memorable and helped everyone, students, teachers and parents alike, grow closer. Overall, I just want to say how grateful I am for having grown up in such a wonderful community. Thank you!
