A Day Full of Colors, Sounds, and Encounters – The German-Ethiopian Cultural Exchange Day at the DBSAA

Last Thursday, the campus of the German Embassy School Addis Ababa transformed into a place of lived diversity and cultural curiosity. During the German-Ethiopian Cultural Exchange Day, everything revolved around togetherness, creativity, and cultural exchange. Already in the morning, the schoolyard and classrooms were filled with lively activity: students of all grade levels took part in various projects that combined German and Ethiopian traditions in exciting ways. Whether pottery, dyeing, crafts, dancing, or cooking – everywhere there was experimenting, laughing, creating, and marveling. In the pottery workshop, artistic vessels and figures were created, while in the dyeing corner, brightly colored fabrics shone with natural pigments, and birdhouses were built in the crafts area. The delicious aroma from the school kitchen filled the entire building – students and teachers cooked traditional Ethiopian and German dishes together, tasted them, and proudly presented the results. A special highlight of the day was the final celebration with the entire school community, where the project results were showcased and parents proudly admired their children’s creations. Through a colorful exhibition, musical performances, and culinary delights, the students demonstrated what they had learned and achieved. The Cultural Exchange Day was more than just a project day – it was a vibrant symbol of how enriching cultural diversity can be and how strong a united community truly is.

Welcome Ceremony for Our New First Graders

Traditional Entrance with School Cones Today was a very special day for our former kindergarten children: they were officially welcomed into primary school. In keeping with tradition, they walked from the kindergarten to the school, proudly carrying their colorful “Schultüten” (traditional German school cones filled with sweets and school supplies). Welcome by the School Community Upon arrival, the entire school community greeted them with cheerful singing. The excitement and joy were clearly visible on everyone’s faces. Celebration in the Gym The celebration continued in the gym, where a festive program had been prepared. The two primary school principals, Mrs. Bezabih and Mrs. Wagner, introduced themselves, followed by a welcoming speech from our head of school, Mr. Hasse. Musical Highlight A special highlight of the day was the wonderful musical performance by the 2nd grade students, which brought big smiles to the faces of the new first graders and their families. Exploring Their New Classrooms To conclude the day, the children of classes 1a and 1b were able to explore their new classrooms together with their teachers – a very exciting moment marking the official beginning of their school journey. We wish all our new first graders a wonderful start to their school life and many happy experiences in the years ahead!

Nami Day at the DBSAA – A colorful afternoon full of laughter, music and encounters

Last Friday, 13.06.25, the afternoon care at the German Embassy School Addis Ababa opened its doors to children, parents and teachers for an open afternoon. In a relaxed atmosphere, the guests were able to gain a lively insight into the day-to-day running of the after-school care program, make new contacts and play, sing and have lots of fun together. The children proudly showed their parents around, showed them their handicrafts and favorite games and gave them a real insight into their colorful world in the afternoon. The open afternoon offered not only fun and entertainment, but also the opportunity for personal exchanges between parents and afternoon care staff. In numerous conversations, it became clear how much the trusting cooperation and family atmosphere in the afternoon care are appreciated. After enjoying snacks and drinks, parents, children and Nami staff slowly said goodbye. Everyone is already looking forward to the next events in our colorful world in the afternoon.

‘DBSAA Warriors’ put in a strong performance at the ICS Diplo Tournament in Addis Ababa

The ‘DBSAA Warriors’ competed with great enthusiasm and impressive team spirit at the prestigious ICS Diplo Tournament at the International Community School (ICS) campus in Addis Ababa. The team is characterized by their special composition: They consist of a committed mix of students, staff and parents of the DBSAA. This cross-generational unit showed a strong presence on the pitch right from the start. The tournament brought together teams from numerous international institutions. This year, the ‘DBSAA Warriors’ faced teams from the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU) and various embassies from Addis Ababa, among others. In exciting preliminary round matches, the team held their own against technically skilled and experienced opponents and delivered passionate matches throughout. Although the team narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter-finals, the ‘DBSAA Warriors’ left a lasting impression with their performance. The ‘DBSAA Warriors’ can look back on their performance with pride and we look forward to the next chapter of their sporting journey.
