German as a foreign language

German at our school abroad means the joint methodically differentiated teaching of native speakers and German learners, taking into account their language competence, culture and international environment.

The DaF (German as a Foreign Language) lessons at secondary level are to be understood as a supplementary offer to regular German lessons. Language problems can be dealt with more intensively and purposefully in small learning groups. Here the four fundamental competences are promoted: listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, writing.

A performance review is carried out by means of regular tests and grades, which are reflected in the certificate. Various language level tests are used:

Elementary school

  • SFD (Sprachstandsüberprüfung und Förderdiagnostik / language level check and promotion diagnostics)

Secondary school

  • "Steps" - Placement test
  • Placement test "German as a foreign language"
  • Exercise and test book "Mit Erfolg zu Fit in Deutsch 1/2" (A1/A2)
  • Certificate "German for Young People" (B1)
  • Individual intake interviews to determine the prognosis
  • Performance reviews of the regular German classes

In the lower secondary level, students have to face the challenges of subject teaching on a German mother tongue level.  This is where the DFU (Deutschsprachiger Fachunterricht) gains enormous importance. Each subject teacher is responsible for introducing the students to the subject key vocabulary in a suitable and comprehensible way. This requires a language-sensitive approach to teaching.

This includes teaching

  • that creates language opportunities
  • which gives the pupils linguistic support
  • that practises reading strategies
  • where Technical terms are introduced and consistently repeated
  • which allows for student-centred error correction

In order to encourage and motivate students German Olympics are held across all classes:

  • Classes 5 and 6: Reading and writing competition
  • Classes 7 and 8: Youth presented
  • Classes 9 and 10: Youth debates

It is important to us to practise the German language in everyday school life. That is why the DBSAA opens itself up within the framework of events such as the International Reading Aloud Day or insists on using the German language. Only by means of a comprehensive language immersion is it possible for students to achieve optimal learning success.
