Medical care

Medical care has improved significantly in recent years. Hospitals that most closely meet European standards are the Nordic Medical Centre, the Suisse Klinik and the Korean Hospital. There are also good medical practices with general practitioners and pediatricians. Nevertheless, one has to take into account that sometimes some examinations/treatments are not possible due to a lack of materials or specialists.

In complicated cases the patients have to be flown out, therefore, an appropriate insurance or membership is strongly recommended. Employees with known chronic illnesses or under constant medical treatment should inform themselves about treatment options in advance.

Furthermore, there are many different well qualified specialists in almost all fields. You will also find very good practices for dental problems or for orthodontic treatment. There is even a dentist who specializes in children.

The local pharmacies are relatively well equipped and some have international, but you cannot always be sure about the quality and purity of the. It makes sense to bring a well-equipped travel pharmacy with common drugs and possibly homeopathic remedies. Also think about lice shampoo, flea medicine, sun protection and teas! Recently it has also been difficult to find medicines against scabies. Also medical equipment (e.g. inhalers, blood glucose meters, blood pressure meters etc.) should be brought from home.

There are mosquitoes, especially in the rainy season, but fortunately no malaria (in Addis!). Malaria prophylaxis is therefore not necessary, unless you are traveling (these can also be obtained in advance). It also makes sense to bring a mosquito spray suitable for the tropics and possibly a mosquito net.

The 3 most common diseases in Ethiopia are respiratory diseases, diarrhoea and skin diseases.

People with asthma or other chronic respiratory diseases should know that the air in Addis Ababa is very dusty and dry; the air pollution is also quite high. Contact lens wearers must also make sure to bring sufficient contact lenses and cleaning products.

Vaccinations
An international vaccination card is absolutely necessary. It is important to refresh the tetanus/diphtheria and poliomyelitis vaccination as well as vaccinations against hepatitis A, B, rabies and meningitis. Especially the rabies vaccination is sometimes very difficult to get in the country. Make sure that you have the full vaccination protection on entry; there are many street dogs in Addis and rabies is common. The yellow fever vaccination is highly recommended, as it is obligatory for travel within Africa (not for Ethiopia) and otherwise you are not allowed to enter the respective country. It is best to seek advice from a tropical medicine specialist.
