Admission Process and Criteria

Children admitted within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), who did not attend a German-speaking school system before, are as a rule only enrolled at the kindergarten and go through the normal enrollment procedures for the kindergarten and the elementary school. Students applying for grade 1 must have turned 6 before June 30th. Following an evaluation, also children that will turn six between July 1st and October 31st can register for grade 1, depending on their maturity. A precondition for admission is physical maturity as well as the passing of a language examination and school entrance examination. The legal guardians of the student must reside in Ethiopia.

All children applying for grade 1 must take part in a school entrance examination. This examination consists of several tasks in the areas of cognitive as well as social-emotional competences and motor skills. It gives valuable information on school readiness from a pedagogical point of view. This school entrance examination is conducted by teaching staff from the Elementary School in May.

The headmistress of the school makes the final decision on the admittance of a child.

If the lingua franca at home is not German, we will check the child's knowledge of German language in a language test. Prerequisites for enrolment in the school are strong capabilities of the child and German language skills, which are sufficient to follow German lessons. The language test is based on standardized procedures and is performed by qualified teachers for German as a second language.

If a child doesn't fulfill the language requirements, he or she will not be admitted.

Enrolment at the Kindergarten and Pre-School of the German Embassy School does not automatically lead to admittanceto Elementary School. Applications may be turned down, if a child does not pass the school entrance examination and/or the language test or grade 1 is already full.

For all children, whose mother tongue is not German, the school offers mandatory classes in German as a foreign language (DaF). If a child needs special or further support, the school management will decide before admission whether the necessary staff is present to meet these needs. In collaboration with the parents, the school will discuss and decide on respective measures and reach binding agreements if possible. Any individual support is only available for additional fees covered by the parents.
