School Types and Degrees

In accordance with the German school system, all children will be provisionally placed into the different school types at the end of grade 4, which are "Gymnasium" (secondary school leading to the "IB-diploma"), "Realschule" (type of German secondary school leading after 6 years to the secondary I final exam, with good results to IB) and "Hauptschule" (caters for the last five years of the compulsory nine years at a German school). At the end of grade 5 children are finally placed into the school types. The school is entitled to award graduation certificates after grade 9 (Hauptschulabschluss), grade 10 (Realschulabschluss), as well as the qualification certificate to proceed to the IB-grades or any other secondary level II in Germany. The IB-Diploma at the end of grade 12 is an international higher education entrance qualification.

In order for your child to meet its individual needs and to find the right school type, the school offers several counseling sessions throughout the elementary school and the orientation phase. These counseling sessions focus on informing parents about the academic performance and the development of their child as well as the learning attitude and social behaviour.

In the middle of grade 4, there will be an in-depth coaching meeting with the legal guardians, in which the form teacher will discuss all options regarding school types (i.e.“Gymnasium” - secondary school leading to the “IB diploma”, “Realschule” - type of German secondary school leading after 6 years to the Secondary I final exam with good results to IB and “Hauptschule” - caters for the last five years of the compulsory nine years at a German school).

At the end of grade 4 the children will be provisionally placed into the mentioned different school types. The decision for their placement is based on their level of performance, the learning development during the elementary school period, the social and work behaviour as well as conclusions of conversations with the parents. Grade 5 and 6 are meant to be “orientation grades” for final placement of the children at the end of grade 6. The following table indicates the marking profile for the assessment of their performance:

 Information for non-German citizenship students

All non-German citizenship students with a recommendation for “Gymnasium” or “Realschule” may transfer to grade 5 of the German Embassy School. Generally, all non-German citizenship students with a recommendation for “Hauptschule” may NOT transfer to grade 5 of the German Embassy School. This rule applies to all children enrolled in grade 1 after the academic school year of 2010/11.

Grade 5 functions as orientation phase for Secondary School and the curriculum is not designed for a specific school type. At the end of grade 5, there will be a final placement into the school types. All students will be taught together from grade 6, but there will be an internal differentiation of learner groups in the main subjects as well as individual grading according to the school types.
